  • Notes
    • !NOTE: 15 Dec 2002: The BARTON DNA Project (www.bartonsite.org) has established that Rufus Barton b. 1606 and Roger Barton (The Immigrant) b. 1628, alleged to be sons of Edward Barton b. 1559, may not be brothers since their descendants (according to current pedigrees) have different Y-Chormosome DNA. [Nov 2013 update: Rufus, Roger and Edward are three distinct yDNA profiles. If the three paper trails really do come together, there are at least two non-paternity-events (NPE).] This DNA result conflicts with many published genealogies which have been accepted as "fact" for decades. Here are some possible casuals: (1) either or both Roger and Rufus were Foster or Adopted sons of Edward, (2) either or both Roger and Rufus were not related in any way to Edward, (3) either Roger or Rufus was a non-paternity event (female infidelity) of Edward... but which one? (4) Both Roger and Rufus were sons of Edward but there was a non-paternity event downstream from one of them. Further research is needed to resolve this apparent conflict.

NOTE: 18 July 2019: The claim that Roger Barton and Rufus Barton are brothers has been proven to be a myth. The myth was a result of E. B. O'Callaghan indexing the name of the tenant of the 1642 lease of Everardus Bogardus' land in New Netherlands as Roger Barton instead of Rufus Barton as shown on the extant lease. This error in O'Callaghan's 1865 Calendar of Historical Manuscripts in the Office of the Secretary of State, Albany, NY, created a bogus presence of Roger Barton in New Netherlands in 1642.

O'Callaghan's deletion of Rufus Barton's name from the 1642 lease in his 1865 Calendar removed the only record of Rufus Barton in New Netherlands, leading Rufus' descendants to believe their family lore placing Rufus in New Netherlands must have been before records were kept, and that Rufus's 1641 record in Rhode Island followed his removal from New Netherlands.

The bogus logic that Rufus left New Netherland in 1641, and the bogus claim that Roger leased land in New Netherland in 1642, led some people to incorrectly conclude that the two Bartons in New Netherland in 1641/1642 were brothers.

Claims that Roger Barton's father was an Edward Barton have no support in credible genealogy.
