 | Col. William Brainerd Barton (1835-1891) Started his military service as a Captain and rose quickly to Colonel. The 48th NY Inf. was known as a real fighting regiment in which Col. Barton was wounded several times. He later led Barton's Brigade consisting of his old unit the 48th NY Regt. and the 47th and 115th NY Regiments. In March 1865 he was promoted to Brevet Brigadier General in recognition of his wartime services. |
