    Seth Maxwell Barton was a U.S. Army officer and, then, a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He later became noted as a chemist.

      !MILITARY service: graduated from West Point in 1849; assigned to infantry; on 11 June 1861 resigned his commission to join Confederate Army as Captain, infantry. July 1861 appointed lieutenant-colonel of the 3rd Arkansas regiment.
