      !CITED in "BARTON", by Cassie Marie Rosser Dec 1956 from the files of Terry Barton, Barton Historical Society, Oct 2002 (BART351) which lists John's birth as "... likely near Columbus MS on the Tombigbee River". "John Barton enlisted in Capt. Townsend's Company and went to Virginia as soon as possible after war was declared. Like his brother, Lemuel, he, too, lost his right arm in the Battle of Sharpsburg."

Served as a Private in Captain William P. Townsend's Company of Roberton's Five-Shooters Infantry. This unit was later transferred to the CSA service where it then became Company C, of the 4th Texas Infantry, Hood's Brigade, General Longstreet's Division.
